This is an interview from Empire Magazine from July 2005 where readers of the magazine send in questions in advance, and then the best 12 are picked for the interview.
Date: July 2005 Magazine: Empire
She loves Hilary Swank, has had some really great fathers and used to regularly give birth to her sister. Dakota Fanning, you have 12 new messages.
Hi Dakota. You're still quite young - wasn't it scary being in a horror film like Hide and Seek?
No. I wanted to do it because I'd never done a character like this before, someone who is so different from me. It was a new experience.
Do you believe in ghosts?
To a certain extent, although I don't have that much experience. I did stay in a haunted hotel in Mexico and that was strange. I think
it was because everybody treated it like a haunted hotel though - it made it kind of weird. It wouldn't have been the same if everybody just
went in and treated it like a normal hotel.
Hey Dakota. You're tutored on set. What's it like to make Robert De Niro wait while you finish your maths?
Oh, that's funny! It doesn't happen like that though. If I'm in the middle of math and they're ready, then I stop and get right back
to work.
Do you still have the iPod that Tom Cruise gave you during War of the Worlds?
I do! I have so many tracks on there, you don't even want to know. There must be 900 songs on it. I've probably listened to about five,
so I'd have to listen to a few more to pick my favourite. I do love Gwen Stefani though.
You've just finished Dreamer with Kurt Russell playing your dad. Who's been your favourite on-screen Pa so far?
All of them have been good but it was so great to work with Kurt, I really loved him. Tom was just unbelievable and Robert De Niro
was great. Denzel wasn't really my dad [in Man on Fire] but Creasy is kind of like Pita's father because her real dad is never around.
Sean Penn as well, I've had a lot of really, really great dads!
Hi Dakota. You seem so mature - do you ever feel you're missing out on a 'normal' childhood?
I guess everybody wants to know about that, but this is my job and what I love to do and I can't imagine my life any other way.
You're tipped as one of Hollywood's leading actresses of the future. Flattering... or too much pressure?
I'm just so honoured to be in the movies I've been in. I feel so lucky about everything. I just take it as it comes.
Is it true that you used to act out giving birth when you were younger, using your little sister Elle as the baby?
Oh God! Yeah, that's true. I used to play around the house all the time and stuff and pretend to do things that weren't really
happening. I think my Mom saw that and so my career kinda happened that way.
Who's your Hollywood role model?
There are so many wonderful actresses out there... and not just wonderful actresses but wonderful people. One of my favourites is
Hilary Swank. I got to meet her and she was really special and nice.
Is it true that you're co-producing some films later this year?
No! That is so funny. That's weird! Gee whizz, I'm 11 years old! I hadn't heard that - that's mad.
Orlando Bloom held you up to the microphone to accept an award from the Broadcast Critics Film Association for I Am Sam... and then
your speech lasted ages. Did you not think of the poor guy's arms?
I wasn't even thinking about what I was saying. I was just, like, "Uhm... ah... yeah, right!" I didn't even know what was going on - it
was so surreal. I couldn't believe that it had happened. I saw Orlando the other day though, and apologised for his arms and back.
If you weren't a successful, world-famous actress, what do you think you would be instead?
I just can't imagine my life without acting. I try not to think about it because I want to be an actress for the rest of my life.
